{Just Married} Alison + Josh

This wedding was a little extra special for me, because the bride was my cousin Alison!

Bridal portraits of Alison before the wedding

The wedding cake was BEAUTIFUL. And actually probably the tastiest wedding cake I’ve ever had.

Groom’s cake – Josh is something of an outdoorsman – to put it mildly! And Alison was his “catch of a lifetime.”

Alison’s friend made this keepsake for the newlyweds, in lieu of a guest book. The guests put their thumbprints and signed their names on the branches.

Alison’s son Caleb was the ring bearer

Alison lost her father in 2008, so her older son James walked her down the aisle. It was the CUTEST thing. The minister asked who gave Alison away for marriage, and James said, “My brother and I do.”

Kristi, Alison’s life-long best friend came up from Texas to be a bridesmaid (and to do Alison’s hair and make-up!)Josh’s momAlison, Josh, and the boys did something called a “sand ceremony” to symbolize the blending of their new family.

So cute. Caleb was hanging onto every word during the ceremony.

I wonder if Josh was changing his Facebook relationship status to “married” as soon as the ceremony was over?

Amelia, the flower girl. Daughter of Alison’s sister Cheree (also known as Cheree’s “mini me” – they’re identical!)

We obviously ended up doing a lot of goofing off while doing wedding party portraits. It had to be done.

On a personal note:

I don’t know why it didn’t really hit me until after the fact, but I was editing photos and was suddenly struck by how cool it was that I was taking photos at Alison’s wedding. She and her family lived in Texas when we were growing up, so Alison, Cheree, and I wrote so many letters back and forth to keep in touch. Yes, these were the days before email or text messages. If we were REALLY lucky, our parents allowed us to make long distance phone calls to each other every once in awhile. They’d come up from Texas during some holidays and school breaks, so we only got to see each other a few times a year. Back then, it never even occurred to me that I’d one day be photographing my cousin’s wedding day. And it was so cool that I did. I wish Alison, Josh, James, and Caleb so much happiness as they begin their lives together as a little family!

Weddings, as a Guest {Part Two}

Follow up to Part One

Subtitled: “Mirrorless Wedding Photography”

My second “wedding as a guest” last month was my friend Lea’s wedding in Columbus, Mississippi. Lea is a dear girl I know from our time together at Muddy’s Bake Shop. My friend Clark and I roadtripped it down there for the ceremony, and I gave the Samsung NX1100 its second trial as my companion camera. Even with just the kit lens, the NX1100 came through! It was a lovely wedding! I was also happy to see some of my awesome former workmates from the bakery – and some Muddy’s folks whom I’ve met before but never had the pleasure to work with. Needless to say, there was a big “Team Muddy’s” contingent in attendance at darling Lea’s wedding!

{Just Married} Emily + Ethan: The Bonus Photos

Whenever I’m hired to photograph a wedding, I always try to shoot some film alongside my primary digital camera. For Emily and Ethan’s wedding in May, I chose to use my Pentax ZX-7 loaded with my fave black and white film. Today I’m finally able to share those bonus shots from the Ashbys’ wedding day!

{Just Married} Emily + Ethan

Today I have for you the photos from Emily and Ethan’s wedding day: May 11, 2013 • Como, Mississippi. Hooray!

You may have seen Emily and Ethan on the SWP blog a few months ago, when I took their engagement photos in Memphis. I was also asked to do their wedding photography, which I was thrilled about! They told me that it would be at Ethan’s parents’ home in Como, Mississippi and that it would be a very intimate ceremony, with only a handful of family members in attendance.  Because I’m quite familiar with Como – it’s only about 15 miles from the town where my family lives – I had gotten it into my head that this wedding was taking place on a farm. I was thinking cows, bales of hay, a pasture…I could not have been more wrong! Ethan’s parents’ home is a 100 year old “rambling” house. It was gorgeous and a perfect setting for this wedding.

A quote from Emily “Our ceremony stand featured photos of all of our grandparents who couldn’t be with us in person, but they certainly were in spirit”

I loved the wallpaper in this section of the house, and the pretty lavendar and green accents around the windows. This was the stairway leading upstairs, where Emily was getting ready for the ceremony

Emily’s headband was BEAUTIFUL – a laurel leaf design, I believe

Here comes the bride! Escorted by her mom and dad.

Sooooooooo excited!!!

Super stoked to be pronounced “man and wife”

“You may kiss the bride!”

For me, this gentleman stole the show: Ethan’s grandfather, Gus. He was amazing!

The precious Olivia, Ethan’s niece. She was hilarious!

After the ceremony was over, everyone just hung out around the lovely front porch. Such a relaxing wedding!

Time for cake!!!

Requisite: cutting the cake photo

Soooooo cute!!!

Next came the group photos. As you’ll see, I was dealing with a real cast of characters!

At this point, I’d said it was time for Emily’s sisters Amy and Jaime to join us for the next set of photos. I sang “Sisters, sisters” from the a song that was in the movie White Christmas. Little did I know that the Bell sisters knew ALL the lyrics to this song and proceeded to sing it and do a little dance number. Apparently it was something they’d done before 😉

The Bell sisters were having a BALL together

A few portraits of the bride and groom!

This is Emily with their friend Kimberly, who was the mischievous one who suggested we climb up to the railroad tracks for a few photos

Then there was more porch sittin’ and a whole slew of toasts from friends and family. And there were, of course, lots of tears and laughs during the toasts.

Once the most of the guests were gone, the bridal party just spent the rest of the night visiting with each other and having impromptu dance parties

I want to thank Emily and Ethan for inviting me to document their wedding. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and hope their life together will be filled with much joy as they clearly felt that night.
